                                        [15]  William Couling #1653, b. c 1822, Kempsford SOM,[13] christened alias HEWER, occupation Keeper.  The certificate is hard to read but it shows William HEWER [possibly Kewer] alias Couling - father William Couling - Kevin Dowd thinks he is son of Asenath Hewer born before her mariage to Thomas William - this would support the alias as 'Hewer' not Kewer nor Kews - my best reading is that the name is intended to be 'Hewer' on the cert of Marriage. That ties in nicely but needs support [best would be baptism] - CHECK 'HEWER' baptisms 1820 -21 -22 Marriage Cert #74 LDS 0856947.

                                              

                                               He married Rachel Winter #5208, 21 April 1851, in Kempsford Cert # 74 LDS Film 0856947,[14] b. c1832, Kempsford GLS,[15] (daughter of Elizabeth Winter #5523) baptized 3 Feb 1833, Kempsfprd GLS.[16]  Rachel: 1851 census shows a Rachel age 18 resident in John Little's home - no other name is given so she is 'represented' as being his daughter. Also shows, as 'lodger' William Couling age 29 [thus b 1822 - fits as Asenath's  son] Also starting in 1861 we find John Little age 9 as 'brother' and in 1871 as 'grandson' John Little [Cowling] This leads to possibility that he is 'son' of William Couling and that 'Rachel'  son born 2 mos. prior to their marriage. NEED! m.cert /Jun 1851/XI 335 [Cirencester] See p/record m.#74 21 April 1851.

                                              

                                               [A] John Little Couling #1642, b. 25 May 1851, Kempsford   GLS,[17] christened 1891 Census, Shows him residing at Dudgrove, baptized 29 June 1851, Kempsford   GLS,[18] occupation groom, buried: 4 July 1939, Kempsford  GLS.[19]  Is he 'John Little', age 9 in 1861 census living  with John Little?. 1851 census shows a 'Rachel' age 18 & William Couling 29 as lodger!! - -The possibility that these are our William and Rachel is great . Re bride surname WYNTER or STRATFORD see marriage source.

                                                     He married Martha Ellen Miller #1678, 20 May 1871, in PC Maisey Hampton GLS,[20] b. 1851, Maisey Hampton,[21] (daughter of Robert Miller #5325 and Elizabeth Howse #5326) occupation servant.[22]  Martha: Mary Ellen Couling b.cert shows m. as 'Millets' the marriage cert. shows her as above, d of Robert Miller.. The 1851census of Maisey Hampton shows d. Martha b. to Robert Miller age 10 Mos. 1861 census shows only m. Eliz.a widow age 57 with son George Don't know where she was at age 11?.

                                                     3.    Mary Ellen Couling #573, b. 26 July 1877, Kempsford GLS,[26] occupation Dom servant, d. Winnipeg Man.  Mary Ellen Couling: 25 at marriage in 1902. Living in Tunbridge 'in service', [Cert MX835682]. In 1891 Kempsford GLS census she is missing. At  14 she, may have already gone into service. We do not know how she got to Kent. Family myth has either she or Ben having a connection with 'Speldhurst' the Baden-Powell connection. Ben  may have had a trades connection with Speldhurst allowing for the meeting of Ben and Mary Ellen???.

Son William is 17 a porter, Ben is 13 a porter, Hubert is 11, Charles is 9, Ethel is 6 and Agnes is 3. census 1341217.
