The STRATFORD line STRATFORD/COULING [no detail for birthdays <100 years ago]
Rachel Wynter Stratford #5208 born c1832, married 21 April 1851, in Kempsford Cert # 74 LDS Film 0856947, William Couling alias HEWER #1653, born c 1822, Marriage Cert #74 LDS 0856947, (son of Thomas William Couling #1521 and Asenath Hewer #1523) occupation keeper. 1851 census shows a Rachel age 18 resident in John Little's home - no other name is given so she is represented as being his daughter. Also shows, as 'lodger' William Couling age 29 [thus b 1822 - fits as Asenath's son] Also starting in 1861 we find John Little age 9 as 'brother' and in 1871 as 'grandson' John Little [Cowling] This leads to conclusion that he is 'son' of William Couling and that 'Rachel' son born 2 mos. prior to their marriage. BUT where do 'Wynter'and/or Stratford? names come frrom on CERT?? William: The certificate is hard to read but it shows William HEWER [possibly Kewer] alias Couling - father William Couling - Kevin Dowd thinks he is son of Asenath Hewer born before her mariage to Thomas William - this would support the alias as 'Hewer' not Kewer nor Kews - my best reading is that the name is intended to be 'Hewer' on the cert of Marriage. That ties in nicely but needs support [best would be baptism] - CHECK 'HEWER' baptisms 1820 -21 -22
I. John Little Couling #1642 29 June 1851, kempsford LDS Film 856946, occupation groom, married Martha Millets #1678, born 1852, Maisey Hampton [1881 census shows age 30, ref: BZ724226. John buried: 4 July 1939, Kempsford LDS Film 0856946 #932. Is he 'John Little', age 9 in 1861 census living with Grandfather John Little. IThe 1851 census shows a 'Rachel' age 18 in John Littles house - quite likely his daughter - also shows William Couling age 29 as 'lodger' The likelihood that these are our William and Rachel is great except for two things - Cert #74 shows marrying a Rachel whose father is said to be Richard Stratford - the IGI shows her to be Rachel Wynter. 12 Aug 99 MORE SEARCH Martha: Cert. is b. cert of Mary Ellen Couling born to Martha and John Little Couling

Mary Ellen Couling #573 born 07 26 1877, Kempsford GLS, ref: BXBZ724226, occupation Dom servant, married 20 09 1902, in Southborough Kent, Benjamin Thomas Russell #312, born 2 Jul 1877, Reg'n Dist -Ticehurst - Sub -Wadhurst, (son of William James Russell #399 and Louisa Reeves #400) ref: film 1469569, occupation Plasterer, died 1957, Toronto ON, buried: Toronto ont, BIRTH CERT BCAZ 04631, census 1341217, at marriage was of Southborough Kent. Mary died Winnipeg Man. Mary Ellen Couling is shown as age 25 at marriage in 1902. Living in Tunbridge Wells .[Cert 835682] In 1891 census she is missing in Kempsford [age 14 and may have already gone into service]. We do not know how she got to Kent. Family myth has either she or Ben having a connection with Speldhurst the Baden-Powell Estate. Ben and his Dad may have had a trades connection with Speldhurst allowing for the meeting of Ben and Mary Ellen???.

Elsie died 1986, Keewatin Ont. Note that Rotherfield is a small town just outside of Crowborough East Sussex
