When Ruth McLennan was a student at Kenora High School [years?] she wrote a History paper which provides some other views of the familiar story.
John Burchill, a Winnipeg police man with long ties to the Lake of the Woods provided a comprehensive history of The Rat Portage War
In Oct '06 John Ibbitson of the The Globe has provided a fresh look at the old battle with an article harkening back to the old dream? of MANTARIO
It must be the Flavour of the Month in journalistic circles as the Globe article was followed by an Ottawa Cirizen articleMANTARIO 2
Another personal note - Even if the powers that be snuck up on me with the amalgamated "KENORA" I can still dream of a simple name change to reflect the glory of old Keewatin. WHY NOT KEENORA??? . Remember how Kenora got its name: KEewatin+NOrman+RAt Portage. So there is nothing old and glorious about the spelling KENORA, particularly when you find that even Rat Portage was WAS STOLEN FROM KEEWATIN!
